The Goldfish Myth
The average attention span of a human being has been reduced to 8 seconds. The average attention span of a common goldfish is 9 seconds. Therefore, human beings are now inferior to goldfish when it comes to our ability to focus.
This infamous and viral claim, made back in 2015, is actually not based in fact at all. It was entirely made up as a part of a marketing campaign for online advertising products. But somehow, especially within the world of education, this lie has continued to propagate, causing concern and exasperation among countless teachers and parents, particularly of middle school and high school-aged students.
If you’re a teacher who hears the Goldfish Myth and thinks, “Why do I feel like that could actually be true,” then don’t spend another minute searching for a way forward.
